Default Possible Limp Mode - engine dies in gear

1998 A6 2.8 Quattro, 180K miles, automatic

The engine light is on. It will start up (as long as the battery has juice - as it sits in the driveway it slowly loses juice and needs a jump). When I put it in D or R it will move but as soon as I hit the gas and it goes over 1000 rpm it dies on me. When in P or N it will rev up just fine.

I've replaced the crank shaft sensor. I've done a TB reset (i was throwing TB codes at one point, but then they left; it appears they're back again).

I've done a battery reset (disconnect and touch the two ends together for 20 seconds).

History:
I bought the car in April and it was running "fine" but had some codes and lights so I started fixing things. Then at one point it wouldn't stay running unless the rpm were above 1100. So I changed out the MAF. Now it won't stay running above 1000 rpm (exact opposite problem).
