clean the sockets? mine were so corroded that they weren't making a good connection... i used some sandpaper and scratched them up and they've been working again for 6 months. if you know the socket is getting power (use a meter), you could just wire them to the tail lights independently.

I repaired mine not too long ago. I pulled out the trunk lid liner and found the sockets corroded and fused together. I soldered in a new wire and has been working since.

As CCA4 suggested, you replace the housing/set because it is a lot less of a hassle. You can get them from ECStuning.com BUT they are always on back order =(
Everytime I order something from ECS, the price doubles when it crosses customs so I try to refrain from ordering there now.

A simple voltmeter test would help answer your question. You should have at least 12 volts & a good ground at the light sockets. If it is found that there is no power at the sockets i would check the wiring where they go from the trunk to the body of the vehicle. They have a tendency to break from years of bending from the trunk opening & closing.

The issue with mine was the wire connections on the back of the housing. They were rotted badly and one wire had broken away. The metal was so bad that I couldn't even solder to it. I found the whole setup on a parts car - housings, lenses, body-color shell that contains everything - for $3. Took it home and swapped the whole thing out. Works great.
I agree with the guys above - replace the housings. It doesn't take long and is a lot less crap to deal with.
