Default Trunk Won't Latch

Hi. My trunk won't latch! Has anyone experienced this? Can anyone tell me what might be wrong. Yes...I have checked and there are no obstructions. I'm thinking the latch itself may be malfunctioning. My car is a 2003 A6 2.7T with a Tiptronic and 51k miles. Thanks for any sugestions.

The latch on the trunk lid commonly malfunctions electrically, just replace the latch. Its easy to change, pry off the trim panel and take out the two screws, pop off the two 10mm nuts holding the latch on and take off the cables.

Thanks Auditech79. Can you tell me if this is a "Dealer Only" part, or is there an online merchant I can purchase it from?

I am having the same issue. I don't even hear anything lock when I press the lock button on the keyfob but I do hear the unlock. Is there anything tricky about taking off the cables, or more importantly, putting them back on?

I assume prying off the lid cover is nothing other than gingerly prying with a screw driver or something...

I found this site for parts. There seems to be a lot of things that could be replaced.. Would I be looking at just replacing the latch?

The dealer wants $80.00 for the latch and $95.00 in labor? No way!

Well, no replies, so I am gonna go for it. The Latch is only $20.00 from the site I posted, so even if it doesn't fix the problem (which I will report on after I swap it out) based on what has been said it will go at some point, so....

Have you tried a little WD40 on the latch? It fixed mine.

On the Latch or The Lock? I sprayed a little bit on the lock part, i.e. part number 6 in the diagram here:

Try spraying WD40 down in the lock mechanism. Sometimes dust or dirt buildup will cause it to stop working. Also, try locking from inside the car using the door button -- my key fob has never unlocked just the trunk.

I sprayed some WD40 into the inner lock mechanism (per diagram posted previously).

I tried locking with door switch, with key, with key fob... nothing. When I press lock, I don't hear anything in the trunk lid, but when I press unlock I hear something.

For now, I will try advice from auditech79 and replace the latch... I just hope what he/she referred to as "latch" is what I think "latch" is, i.e. part 27 on the aforementioned link... This part, aka the "latch", came to $32.00 shipped. If it doesn't fix the problem, well, it is only $32.00. I will keep everyone posted, pun intended. Maybe if auditech79 reads this he/she can comment on whether I am barking up the right tree or not...

Default trunk parts a plenty...

OK, the "latch" per the diagram I posted previously is not the part (D'oh!). I should have went with my instincts which told me it was the inner-lock... I will order that part and see if that is it, which I think it is. The inner lock seems to latch (i used a screw driver to test it), but it does not stay latched, and it doesn't move smoothly... I uploaded some pictures of the trunk after I took the trim off (for others who might be curious). I also captured the repair manual diagram of the trim piece and screw locations. Note that all screws holding the trim on are phillips, except for the emergency release handle (which has a cover on it hiding the screw). The emergency handle screw requires a torx screwdriver. I will update when I get the inner lock part...
